125 Squared - the new standard for blog advertising?
They’re everywhere now, on most blogs and not just there. I’m talking about those small square ads, the 125 x 125.
But what makes themĀ so popular, on blogs at least? Much more so than other ad formats? Well, for one, they’re square, and any content you might put in them would be much easier to follow than, for example, reading 3 lines of text on a leaderboard (728 x 90), moving the mouse cursor under the text as not to jump lines accidentally.
Being square and small, they can fit into most small patches of blank space, unlike larger formats for which it might be pretty hard to find sufficient horizontal space. There are other formats, like the 250 x 250 or skyscrapers, but instead of using those you can put in a “cluster” of 125’s. That can also mean the end of banner rotation, as an advertiser might be more willing to make sure his small ad gets exposed to every visitor rather than to have a big one being shown 1/5th or 1/10th of the time.
And what if you have a free area of, say, 390 x 300? Too little horizontal space for a 468 x 60, too much space for a 250 x 250 and don’t even think about skyscrapers. Well, slap in a group of 6 125’s (3 x 2). In the little space remaining under the 2 rows of ads you can put a small “advertise here” graphic, linked to your advertising sales pitch site.
Yes, this is a truely awesome format, proven by the fact that it recently got its almost-exclusive agency: PerformancingAds.com
What you do is you sign up, set up your advertising area(s) andĀ PerformancingAds provides you with a plugin for your blogging platform (be it Wordpress or another) and installation instructions. Once installed, “exchange” ads will be placed until you start selling inventory. By displaying those ads you gain credits that you can use to promote your own site on others. When you start selling ads, the exchange ads get replaced with actual ones, and aside from the price you sold the ad for, you continue to earn exchange credits. You get to set your own prices, by the way…
So whether you sell your ads privately or you opt to sign up with PerformancingAds, don’t miss out on this, your income will only have to gain.
